Civics Interview — Privacy Policy

Civics Interview is practice for the spoken civics portion of the US naturalization interview. You tap once, an interviewer asks you questions out loud, and you answer out loud. This page says what happens to what you say.

There is no account, no sign-in and no advertising. The app contains no analytics or advertising SDK, does not use the advertising identifier, and does not track you across apps or websites.

Your voice

While an interview is running, audio from your microphone is streamed to OpenAI's realtime speech service, which is what hears your answer and decides whether it was right. The stream is encrypted end to end and the app does not record it: no audio file is written to your device, and none is stored on our server. Your microphone is closed whenever the interviewer is speaking, and closed entirely between interviews.

OpenAI processes that audio on our behalf under their API terms, which state that data submitted through the API is not used to train their models.

What we keep

When an interview finishes, the app sends us a record of the run so we can find out why interviews go wrong — a question misheard, a verdict filed against the wrong answer, a session that stalled. That record contains:

• the questions you were asked and the order they came in;
• a written transcript of each answer you gave, and the verdict recorded for it;
• your score, and the state you chose;
• the app version, your iOS version and your device model (for example iPhone15,2);
• timings of the events in the session.

It contains no name, no email address, no account, no device identifier and no location. We have no way to connect one run to another, or any run to you. We keep these records in Google Cloud Logging, and we do not sell them or share them with anyone.

What stays on your phone

One thing: the state you picked, so you are not asked for it again. It is stored in the app's own preferences and is removed when you delete the app.

Children

The app is not directed at children and collects nothing that identifies anyone of any age.

Your choices

Declining the microphone permission means the app cannot run an interview, because answering out loud is the whole of what it does. Deleting the app removes everything stored on your device. Because the records above carry nothing that identifies you, we cannot find or delete an individual person's runs on request — there is nothing in them to search by.

Changes

If this policy changes, the date at the top of this page changes with it.
